The plan of the fortress is missing, and suspicion points to Captain Powner who is engaged to marry Colonel Harte's daughter. Powner’s protestations of innocence are fruitless. He is condemned to be shot at sunrise. Ralph, the Colonel’s son, and in reality the guilty wretch, is conscience-stricken. He frees the Captain and bids him fly for his life. Ralph, broken by remorse, confesses his guilt on paper, then takes his own life. Captain Powner is captured by the followers of the leader of the mutineers, and once more is condemned to death.
