Scenic Temple Theatre was originally built in 1829 as the Westminster Congregational Unitarian Church, but was converted to a theatre in 1902. The Scenic Temple was the second theatre in Providence to regularly exhibit motion pictures.

By 1916, the theatre’s name had been changed to the Rialto Theatre. James C. Thornton resigned as theatre manager in 1928.
